Style Cravings & Other Words

Green Eyed Shopper

by Tracy

To drink or not to drink... bottled water, that is!

Grumble:

Nothing irks me more than annoying plastic water bottles!

Well, OK a few things do (like my husband, on most days), but today I’m on a plastic water bottle rant, people. Have I been living under a rock, or was water free, just a few years ago?

At this point, most of us know that plastic water bottles are known to leach (emit) chemicals into the very water you’re drinking (um, gross!)… Who wants to drink that?

Now, add the following factoids to that gnarly little gem: In 2006, each American drank an average of 167 bottles of water and ONLY 23% of those bottles were ever recycled! Yeah, now you’re pissed, too because you just did the math and realized that about 38 Billion plastic bottles go into the landfill each year! And, let’s not even bring up the manufacturing process, the cost of oil and the amount of carbon that’s emitted when making those f#$@ing bottles.

As you can see, we’re in a pickle, my friend – and, I’m not talking about a nice Kosher, dill.…. !

So, how do we stop this water bottle debauchery?

Goodness:

You do so with a groovy, reusable, eco-friendly metal canteen! Remember how you swung that dented round canteen between your non-existent boobs at summer camp?

Well, that’s old school and fun for a weekend hike, but not so great when sporting your Choos and dominating your power lunches. Not to mention, do you really want to highlight your tatas at the office?

Go:

So, you need to hop on the web and get yourself the Gucci of canteens: a customizable Sigg www.mysigg.com stainless steel bottle with interchangeable lid.

Most peeps love these bottles because of the fun graphics and bright colors. I find them a bit trendy for my taste, so I stick with a much sleeker and edgier stainless bottle, the Klean Kanteen www.kleankanteen.com.

I like to think of it as the Christian Siriano, of the canteen world. FIERCE.

Either way you go, it’ll set you back about 25-30 bucks, plus the one-time cost of your Brita filter pitcher www.brita.com and monthly charcoal filters.

Then you’re back to drinking water for FREE everyday AND you’ll be telling all of your pals, “Auf Wiedersehen to plastic bottles!”

One Stop Dressing

by Ali

It’s an addiction I admit it. And there is no higher power or 12-step program to cure me or curb my appetite. I’m a dress fiend. So intense is my craving that while shopping for jeans, a cute top or even shoes, my eyes will always seek and my hands will always pull a dress from the rack that I should, “just try on for the hell of it.” Even splitting my wardrobe between closets in New York City and LA, I had to search furniture shops to find an armoire to hold my dresses. With a little luck and determination I had one built to my specifications and within budget, but even still I can’t fit them all and off-season is packed in a case under the bed. I have a particular affinity for Diane Von Furstenberg and she dominates my dress collection along with a few vintage finds from The Way We Wore in Los Angeles.
If you’re like me, no matter the occasion, the nine to six, seven, eight grind, a party whether casual dinner or black tie affair, or just a night out with your beau a dress is always appropriate and a simple solution. I’m skipping any notion of therapy and rejoicing in girl power. We have choices and a dress is a damn good one. Here are my picks for fall.
